This is a nice example of a Model 1866 Winchester musket in caliber .44 rimfire. The condition is well above average with lots of original blue remaining on the barrel and magazine tube. SN# 42,000. Made in 1870. Standard 27" round barrel, ladder sight, brass semi-crescent shaped buttplate, and sling swivels. The gun appears to have been issued to some sort of military organization as there are rack numbers on the left side of the frame and buttstock, both #66. The rear of the buttplate is marked "17" and "G". If you look very closely on the right side of the stock, there is a tiny Kangaroo symbol braced by the letters "W" and "G". We've exhausted our resources on this one but have a few theories as to what this might be. First, the Kangaroo symbol is almost entirely unique to Australia. The organization and/or use may be difficult to establish but keep this in mind. We think of "G" as standing for "Guards" like a militia, however, in Australia, Jail is spelled "Gaol"...and "G" can sometimes be an abbreviation for a particular prison.
Overall condition is NRA Antique Very Good+ with nice brass frame and buttplate that have aged to a mellow patina. The barrel and magazine tube retain considerable amounts of original blue...approx. 40-50% original finish that is mixed with patina. The barrel markings are excellent however, there are some scattered areas of rust and corrosion towards the front of the barrel due to poor storage. Some of this will clean up if desired...other areas will show light pitting. Very good screws overall. Very Good Wood overall that's solid...perhaps lightly cleaned at some point. Wood to metal fit is generally good but like most 66's, a hair under the metal....Its our opinion that Winchester hadn't started the practice of slightly over-sizing their wood to offset natural shrinkage (especially guns shipped to dryer climates) until sometime after the Model 1873 was introduced. Nice action that's still in original .44 rimfire congfiguration w/dual firing pins. Very good bore with strong rifling and some light scattered pitting.
The bayonet is in Excellent overall condition retaining most of its original blue minus some light closet freckles. This is the only 66 bayonet we've seen that is blued...all others have been bright. Nice example of the Model 1866 Winchester. Item# 8102
