This is an original set of 3 piece Winchester cleaning rods for the Model 1873 Saddle Ring Carbine. These were stored in the buttstock of every 1866 and 1873 Winchester carbine except for the 32-20...which had a bore size too small for jointed rods. Carbines recieved 3 piece rods, rifles generally had 4 pieces, and muskets 5 pieces. The carbine rods are a little more unique as they are slightly longer than the rifle cleaning rods. This is the later style with the iron tip instead of the brass. I've owned many 1873's over the years and as best I can tell from the few rifles that still had their original rods, the iron-tipped variant started to appear around the year 1892. Therefore, these rods would be correct for a .38 or .44 caliber 73 carbine mfd circa 1892-1920...or approx. SN# 400,000 to 720,000.
The set is complete and in good condition with good threads and no cracks, bends, or alterations. The metal has been cleaned and as you can see from the photos, there are some light pits. These are not reproductions that have flooded the market in recent years...but a real set of original Winchester cleaning rods with the scarcer iron tip.
