This is a Standard-sized Allen and Thurber Pepperbox pistol in .36 Caliber made in Worcester, Massachusetts (circa 1847-1865). The barrels are fluted and solid with no ribs measuring 4.75" with 6 shots. This is one of the few pepperboxes we've seen that actually retains discernable original finish with 30% original blue down in the barrel flutes. This gun shows plenty of use but significantly less than most we've encountered over the years. The action has worn to silver with engraved floral vignettes on the frame, recoil shield, and backstrap. Bar hammer shows traces of original case colors. Walnut grips with birdshead handles have 35% original varnish remaining with the original owner's initials "A.R" (about 1/4" high) hastily carved onto the right side. Given the initials, we suspect this could very well have been a soldier's personal carry weapon during the American Civil War. Initials were often carved into objects of value by soldiers encamped in large groups as a means to discourage and/or help identify stolen property. Nice working action.
