This is a rather scarce Confederate-made sword by B. Douglas of Columbia, South Carolina. This walked into a local show and the dealer who picked it up told us it came right out of a house near Madison, GA. As you can see in the photos, it looks very similar to ones made by Kenansville but the guard has a very distinct casting pattern on the front in an oval-shaped rough sand-cast relief. The contours of the guard are also a little more squared-off in appearance. The blade is way with an unstopped fuller. Its completely uncleaned with dirt, heavy patina, and even some drops of old paint. The guard is bent. Wood grip has no leather remaining but strands of original string down in the recesses and a bit of the original iron wire is still visible under the end cap. No scabbard. A scarce and desirable Confederate sword maker!
