This is a good example of a scarce Model 1896 Mauser Rifles used in the Boer Wars of South Africa. Typical of many Boer Mausers, it has the initials of the owner in the stock. Quite a number of had German and Dutch surnames that started with the letter "V." This one looks like "B.V." This rifle was almost certainly captured by the British as we believe it originated from a former British Colony. According to another website, this rifle would have originally been part of a contract 2000 rifle contract that Mauser built for the Z.A.R. (Zuid Afrikaanishe Republiek or South African Republic) in 1897. The top of the receiver is blank with no crest which I also understand is correct for a ZAR rifle. It was manufactured by DWM (Deutsche Waffen under Munitionfrabriken). Low serial number is in the 400 range. All matching numbers except for the bolt which is quite common on Boer War Mausers. The cleaning rod is also missing. Otherwise, everything is matching including the barrel, receiver, stock, rear sight, and trigger housing. There are no import markings, commerical markings, or English proofs.
Overall, this rifle is in NRA Antique Very Good condition. The metal is smooth and a mixture of dark original blue and a brown patina. The receiver has about 50-60% darkened blue, 35% on the floorplate and triggerguard, and 40% on the barrel. Traces of fire blue on the bolt latch and some nice fire blue inside the action on top of the magazine charger. Original sights include the original military rear ladder sight and post front with "V" shaped blade insert. The stock is in Good+ condition with lots of nicks, dings, and small bruises giving evidence of war-time usage. The wood is has never been sanded with perfect wood to metal fit. Still a nice light reddish orange color that hasn't turned dark. Original sling swivels and bayonet lug. Good+ bore....the lands show some wear but there's very little pitting and its still fairly bright from both ends. No rings or bulges. It may clean better. A nice solid example of a rare ZAR Boer War Mauser.
