Colt 1862 Police Revolver

This is an outstanding Civil War production Colt Model 1862 Pocket Police Revolver in .36 caliber with a desirable 6-1/2" barrel. Serial number is in the 14,000 range making it late 1862 production. Numbers are 100% matching. Barrel address reads:  ADDRESS COL SAML COLT NEW-YORK USA AMERICA. Left side of trigger guard is clearly marked "36 CAL". These were quite popular with Union officers and enlisted men during the Civil War who privately purchased these weapons in large quantities during the War. The Model 1862 Police and Navy Revolvers were virtually the same size as the .31 caliber Model 1849 Pocket Revolvers only they were made in the larger .36 caliber...the same caliber as the large framed Models 1851 and 1861 Navy Revolvers.

Overall condition grades to NRA Antique Excellent with 93% vivid original case colors remaining on the frame and loading lever. Barrel and cylinder retain 70% original blue from holster wear that ranges from thinning blue mixed with patina in the more exposed areas to vivid bright blue on the rear portion of the barrel, sides of the lug, in the flutes, and around & underneath the loading lever. The majority of the screws still display the bulk of their original fire blue. Walnut grips are in Excellent Plus Condition with 99% original varnish remaining...perfect wood-to-metal fit with no chips, cracks, or repairs. As is often the case on most 1862's, the silver plating on the straps has all but worn or flaked off. Only traces of the original silver are visible. This seems to be the norm for 62 Pocket Police and Navy Revolvers as we've handled a number of very fine examples over the years and have yet to find one with more than just traces of the silver remaining. The  action works beautifully with proper indexing, hammer positions, and cylinder alignment. Wedge still mates barrel tightly to frame. Bore is nearly perfect with a bright mirror bore with a little bit of frosting down in the grooves directly in front of the cylinder. A super crisp example of the of an early Civil War production Model 1862 Police.
