Colt Model 1878 Frontier Six Shooter Revolver

This is a sharp looking Model 1878 Double Action Revolver.  Antique Serial number is in the 38,000 range.placing its DOM towards the early months of 1898.  Standard blued finish, checkered hard rubber grips w/Rampant Colt Logo and 7 1/2".  Chambered in Winchester's Caliber 44 WCF aka 44-40, this would have been an ideal partner to a Winchester Model 1873 or 1892 carbine.  Having a single re-loadable cartridge that worked in both your rifle and your pistol was considered quite an advantage on the American Frontier.  So much so that Colt marked often marked the barrels of its 1873 Single Action and 1878 Double Action revolvers (including this one) "COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER".

Overall condition grades to NRA Antique Fine overall retaining 50% original blue with some freckling.  The balance has worn to grey/brown metal.  Nice edges and markings throughout.  The Frontier Six Shooter marking is perfect...but the camera didn't do as good a job of capturing the left side of the barrel as we would have liked.  A few spots of light corrosion from poor storage... that would clean up considerably if desired.  100% original throughout down to the smallest screw. This gun does not show much usage. Strong hints of fire blue on screws, back of hammer and trigger.  Sides of hammer still show some original brightness...that's right..sides of hammers on 1877's and 1878's were polished...not blued or cased. The hard rubber grips are in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs with nice checkering and fit to the metal perfectly.  Action works nicely.  Good bore..still fairly bright down in the grooveswith some scattered pits and frostiness on top of the lands.  A very respectable example of an Antique Colt 1878 that's still showing a lot of original color and in one of the most desirable barrel and caliber configurations.
