A short but detailed little book on the history, photos, and poems about the Famous Lost Battalion which survived 5 days being surrounded by superior German forces in the Argonne during World War One. There were about 550 men from the 77th Division which was nicknamed the "Statue of Liberty" division. I don't think words a worthy enough to describe the hardship and steadfast courage these young men,its members mostly immigrants from New York City, endured steadfastly refusing to surrender while holding their position until American forces could break through to rescue them. Three Medals of Honor were awarded to Lt Colonel Charles Whittlesey, Major George McMurtry, and Captain Nelson Holderman. I found this little book nestled amongst some miscellaneous militaria at a show a few years ago. Its not in the greatest condition but I believe this is the original printing dating to the early 1920's. The cover needs to be re-glued to the binding and the front 2 pages are loose. A rare little book.
