This is a very nice example of a Lefaucheux style Pinfire Revolver from the 1860's. It has Belgian proofmarks identifying it as being proofed in Liege with the inspector's initial "T". Patented by Lefaucheux in the 1830's, the pinfire was Europe's first cartridge ammunition. By the 1850's, the pinfire had been improved with fully metallic cartridge casings and incorporated into a revolver design by Lefaucheux's son. This one features a five inch octagonal barrel with six shot cylinder in .38 caliber pinfire. Iron faceted grip cap still retains its original lanyard ring. It features a double action design with mounted ejector rod and loading gate. Note the small oval cutout in the frame just above the trigger to allow clearance for the pin-primed ammunition. While it's certainly not a full-sized Lefaucheux in .44 caliber, it's not a pocket model either. Instead, it's what some American collectors might refer to as a "Belt" or "Navy" sized revolver.
Overall Condition Grades to NRA Antique with 85% bright original blued finish overall. Hammer and trigger retain the majority of their original bright polish with some light freckling from age beginning to take hold. The grips have 93% original varnish which is still light orange-red...still undarkened by dirt or grease. No chips or cracks...just some light handling marks. The hue on these grips give Excellent contrast to the blued metal on this revolver. It really has a great look to it. Mechanics are excellent as this revolver seems to have experienced little use over the past 150 years. Bore is Excellent with strong orig. four groove rifling.
