This one is in .22 Caliber with Part Round 10" barrel and target sights. Factory records indicate that only 116 examples of the Model 1891 were produced between 1892-1898 making it one of the most challenging Remington variations for a collector to obtain. Note: There may be more than show up in the records. The serial number is in the 700 range...however, my Remington books note that numbering system on these Model 1891's is "indecipherable". Barrel is marked in script " REMINGTON ARMS CO. ILION N.Y.". Left side of frame is stamped "REMINGTON'S ILION N.Y. U.S.A." followed by "PAT MAY 3D NOV. 15 1864 APRIL 17TH 1866".
Overall, NRA Antique Very Good+ condition. One thing I really like about this gun is that it shows a lot of good old-fashioned honest wear while still retaining some original finish. For example, the case colors on the frame are mostly faded out and turned to grey but there are still some good discernable colors remaining in protected areas. Barrel has 10% original blue with the balance worn to grey. Good strong patches of original blue are located along the sides of the forend, around the front and rear sights, and a bit down in the transition from octagon/round just in front of the wood. Breech block has 80% original blue. Strong traces of original fire blue remain on the sides of the trigger. Very Good walnut stocks that show some wear, but are very solid, fit the metal nicely, and have no cracks, chips, or repairs. Good working action. Bore is in Fair+ to Good condition overall....no signs of major pitting (which plague most .22 Caliber guns from the 19th century) but frosty and shows moderate wear to the rifling. No bad pits, rings, or bulges. A very respectable example of one of Remington's rarest guns!
