Remington Split Breech Carbine Type II

This is a scarce Remington large frame Split Breech Carbine in Caliber .50 Rimfire.  The US Gov't ordered 15000 of these in late 1864 but weren't received until just after the end of the Civil War.  It is believed that Remington bought back the entire production back from the US Gov't in 1870 and sold to France for the Franco-Prussian War.  Today, these are quite rare here on US soil.  Overall condition is NRA antique Good+ to VG...metal has nice markings and edges but looks like it was polished to a silvery grey...no pitting.  Near excellent wood with crisp cartouches.  Nice bore.  All in all, a very solid example of a late war production breech loading carbine.
