This is an early S&W Second Model .32 Double Action revolver with a scarce pair of the so-called "Turkey" hard rubber grips. It also comes in the original box. Nickel finish with a 3-1/2" barrel and five-shot cylinder. Note the early style dual cylinder stops with short-flutes on the cylinder. It's almost identical to the ultra-rare 1st Model (only 30 were made) except the side plate is oval-shaped instead of squared. S&W produced just over 22,000 2nd Models from 1880-1882. This one has a good low serial number in the 4,500 range and is only 400 numbers away from an almost identical example (which also has Turkey Grips) pictured on pg. 66 of Smith & Wesson 1857-1945 by Neal and Jinks. Note the patent dates on the barrel which does not include the 1880 patent. Also note the additional two patents forking at the junction of the barrel rib and topstrap. These were apparently only used for a short time and are identical to the markings found on the 1-1/2 Single Action Revolver. 100% all matching numbers which include the frame, barrel, cylinder, latch, and grips.
Overall condition is NRA Antique Excellent with 97% original nickel with some scratches on the cylinder. TG and barrel latch show 75% and 85% original blue respectively. 80-90% soft S&W case colors on the hammer. The grips are in Fine Condition overall with all the details in the ornate panels still visible. Only flaw...and it's a minor one as I didn't even see it until I removed the grips to check the serial number...is a small chip on the bottom right grip to the hard rubber that was reattached. The action functions perfectly with the frame and barrel still tight with no wiggle or play at the latch. Bore is Excellent.
This would make a positive edition to most any S&W collection as the anchor point for their .32 caliber double action revolvers. As much as we'd all like to own a first model with a squared side-plate, the math simply isn't on our side this time, as there were never more than a handful of 1st Model .32 DA's in existence (30 units) making them nearly impossible to find and prohibitively expensive. This 2nd Model has a good low serial number, a scarce set of Turkey grips, a very early barrel marking, and it's in the original box.
