This is a Model 1873 Winchester sporting rifle. Its a perfect wall-hanger and in .44 Caliber with an octagon barrel. As you probably know, you can't even find a ratty Model 73 in 44 Caliber with an octagon barrel for less than 1200-1400 dollars nowadays. Serial number is in the 505,000 range. Made circa 1896. This one is as cheap as they get, but be forewarned, its a real clunker with lots of problems and replaced parts. Good news: Has a good bore and good barrel markings with Winchester patent dates. It also has original sights...although the rear is bent and missing the aperture. Front is original but replaced blade. Action works but its not pretty and its loose. Firing pin seems stuck out. Bad News: extractor gone. No dust cover. Wood looks to be old replacements with some tacky and completely fake Indian tacks. Buttplate is incorrect brass replacement. Many screws look replaced or pretty beat. Kinda bad news: I'm not sure what's going on with the magazine tube...it could be that someone turned it around backwards and tried to darken it up...or its a pretty good replacement tube. Overall condition is NRA Antique Poor overall. Metal is mostly patina with some light scattered pits here and there. Metal is pretty worn but not severe. Good hamer knurling. Overall, this is not something that's very collectible. Yes, it could be greatly improved upon and made more valuable but the appealing thing about this gun is that its a real 1873 in 44-40 that's cheap enough(ones dug up out of the ground bring more than this!) to hang on the wall and not have to worry about. Sold As-is! Sorry, but no returns on project items like this.
