Winchester 1892 Rifle

A nice untouched Model 1892 sporting rifle.   Antique with a good early serial number in the 55,000 range.   Mfd circa 1895.  Standard 24" octagon barrel, full magazine, and crescent buttplate.   Nice early markings include the 2 line barrel address and early style tang markings with 3 lines including John Browning's 1884 patent.   Original sights include the standard front with German silver blade.   Rear sight appears to be original.  It's NOT a flattop but has a slightly lower profile than the standard buckhorn rear.

Overall condition, NRA Antique Fine with 50% thinning receiver blue with a few small scratches.  The barrel and magazine tube have approximately 70% thinning original blue.  Bolt has 85% blue.  Hammer shows 60% nice strong original case colors while lever has silvered out with approximately 25% light case colors that are stronger in protected areas.   Nice markings and very good screws throughout.   The wood is near Excellent with the exception of a few light scratches and a more significant one on the left side of the fore-end (see photo).   In spite of being 115 years old, the wood has not darkened over the years and still remains a pleasing light reddish-orange in color.   Perfect wood to metal fit with the edges of the wood still retaining their original fit where the wood swells just slightly over the edges of the metal.   Has never been cleaned or redone.   In fact, the stocks retain approximately 50% original varnish.  The action is still crisp and tight.  Fine+ bore that's still bright with strong rifling.   All in all, a nice clean example of an early Model 1892 in a very good caliber and antique serial number.   This is a very nice gun for the money.
