Winchester 1890 Rifle Antique w/ Case Colored Frame

This is a sharp little example of an early Winchester 1890 rifle.   It's an early 2nd Model with takedown frame, antique serial number, and the desirable case colored frame.   Standard 24" octagon barrel in caliber .22 WRF which is the hardest to find of the original three flavors of .22 rimfire offered in the Model 1890.   Nice early antique serial number is in the 59,000 range which dates to the year 1898.   Comes with a factory letter that states this rifle was received in Winchester's warehouse on July 11, 1898 and shipped with 74 other 1890's on July 16, 1898.   It also comes with a pair of original Lyman sights; a tang sight coupled with the Lyman front sight.   Rear sight is the standard adjustable Winchester 1890 sight...very few antique production Model 1890's have these.   Usually, early examples are found with simple non-adjust block style rear sights.   From personal observations, these adjustable ones make their first appearance around the year 1898.  This is probably the 3rd or 4th one we've had that was built in the year 1898 with this style of rear sight.   It also appears to be very early production.  Look closely at the photos of the rear sight and you'll also notice that it's plain and lacks the customary 1901 patent date.

Overall condition is NRA Antique Fine with 80% original blue on the barrel and magazine tube that is starting to tone over to a pleasing brown patina.   The case colors on the frame have mostly faded out to a lightly mottled coined nickel-silver with 20% strong case colors visible in more protected areas...i.e. around the takedown screw, hammer, and trigger guard areas.   The bolt has 65% fading blue.   Very good screws overall and excellent markings throughout.   Nice walnut stocks with 60% original thinning varnish visible mostly on the stock.   No chips, cracks, or repairs.   One small spot of rust on tip of buttplate...which should clean up if desired.   Excellent action and the bore is in Excellent condition as well...a nice surprise as most .22 bores from the 19th century fell victim to corrosive primers and black powder.   This rifle was well-cared for and the owner must have been rather devout when it came to cleaning the bore after each use.   A nice sharp example of an antique case colored Model 1890 rifle with a great set of sights, factory letter, and a super bore!
